Press Release - May 2, 2008

The Warehouse Point Fire Department's annual carnival and parade, a local tradition which dates back to the 1950's, has seen its last show.

A combination of factors contributed to the decision not to proceed with the event. Increased overhead and startup costs, scheduling, difficulties with the amusement company that supplies the rides, tougher state regulations regarding games of chance and bingo, food prices and the downward trend in the economy were factors that impacted this decision.

The department will still hold several smaller fund raisers, such as their annual Easter and Mother's Day flower sales, which limit its fiscal and legal liabilities.

The Warehouse Point Fire Department was formed in 1920 following a fire at the old Windsor Hotel on Bridge Street in May of 1909. A mass village meeting was held in Warehouse Point to form a fire department and procure the necessary equipment needed to do so. The department has served the community ever since - responding to fires, floods, accidents and more recently, medical emergencies. It also provides mutual aid to the neighboring communities of Broad Brook and Windsor Locks.

In addition to its emergency duties, the department is active in town, supporting local Scholarships and charitable activities and hosting the children's Halloween Party and parade each year.
